ABC7 In Los Angeles And Littlstar To Take Fans Behind The Scenes Of The 88th Oscars In Virtual Reality

ABC Owned Television Station, ABC7 (KABCTV) in Los Angeles is launching a 360 VR experience on Oscar Sunday that takes viewers behind-the-scenes of The Oscars the week leading up to the show, including a preview of the Governors Ball with Wolfgang Puck, a walk down the full length of the red carpet and the rooftop of Jimmy Kimmel’s sound stage for an aerial view of the venue, red carpet and the iconic Hollywood sign. The full experience will be available on abc7.com/vr and ABC7’s Facebook page and via Littlstar web, mobile, headset and Apple TV platforms beginning Sunday at 2:00 p.m. PT.  A sneak peak from the Governor’s Ball preview is live now at abc7.com/vr. 

The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7:00 p.m. EST/4:00 p.m. PST.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

The Oscars, produced by David Hill and Reginald Hudlin, and hosted by Chris Rock, will also be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

“The Oscars® Opening Ceremony: Live From The Red Carpet,” hosted by “Good Morning America” Anchor Robin Roberts and "LIVE with Kelly and Michael" Co-Host and “GMA” Co-Host Michael Strahan, begins at 7:00 p.m. EST/4:00 p.m. PST on ABC and is the only official red-carpet event. Additionally, from 7:30–8:30 p.m. EST, ABC is the only telecast broadcasting live and exclusively from the red carpet.

Fans also have several ways to access the show on digital platforms. “The Oscars Backstage” on Oscar.com is the ultimate second-screen experience.   Presented by Samsung, “The Oscars Backstage” enables fans to choose from four channels that will pull from more than 20 live cameras strategically placed on the red carpet and backstage at the Dolby Theatre providing insider views into the most memorable moments of the night. Pre-show channels include Director's Cut, Arrivals, Fashion and Red Carpet. During the show, the channels are Director's Cut (including the popular Thank You cam), Audience, Backstage and Press Rooms.  Hosts include actor/writer/producer Orlando Jones, actress and TV personality Diane Mizota, actor Matt Shively, film critic and entertainment reporter Ben Lyons and entertainment and sports reporter Chris Connelly.  

The Oscars will stream live on ABC.com and the WATCH ABC app in ABC’s eight owned TV station markets, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Fresno, Raleigh-Durham and Philadelphia.  The full show will be available on demand to viewers nationwide the next day.

The annual “Jimmy Kimmel Live: After The Oscars” special will air live on Oscar Sunday, February 28, after the late local news EST/CST and at 10 p.m. PST on the ABC Television Network. 

On February 29, 2016, “LIVE with Kelly and Michael” will continue its awards season tradition with the fifth edition of “LIVE’s After Oscar Show,” airing live in national syndication at 9:00 a.m. EST. The top morning talker’s annual post-Oscar telecast has become one of its most popular episodes and is broadcast from the magnificent Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. Mere hours after the festivities have wrapped on the same stage, thousands of fans will fill the venue for an action-packed hour celebrating all things Oscar, from the A-list personalities to the incredible fashions, star-studded red carpet and backstage excitement. In the past, Kelly and Michael have welcomed award winners such as Lupita Nyong’o, Octavia Spencer, Christoph Waltz, and the cast of Best Picture winner “The Artist,” as well as 2015 Oscar host Neil Patrick Harris.

Augmented Multimedia: Amped-Up Display, Camera and Sound

The IDOL 4, featuring the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 617 processor, and the IDOL 4S, featuring the Snapdragon 652 processor, deliver advanced features and capabilities that allow consumers to experience console-quality 3D gaming, enhanced photography and videography, as well as home theater-quality audio.  These Qualcomm Technologies processors also features an X8 LTE modem and 802.11ac Wi-Fi connectivity which supports very fast download speeds. In addition, it is reversible left to right: stereo sound is always on the correct side, even when the phone is flipped. And the strategically placed speaker grille ensures that sound is unobstructed, whether the phone is facing up or turned over. 

Augmented Reality: Part of the IDOL 4 Experience

Last but not least: The IDOL 4S’s innovative packaging design transforms into a pair of virtual reality goggles which, when combined with the smartphone, becomes the portal for users to enter the world of immersive 360-degree viewing and gaming. Virtual reality content such as videos and games can be downloaded onto the device from the Onetouch VR Store, a built-in app to easily access saved virtual reality content or streamed in realtime via Littlstar.

LOS ANGELES, FEBRUARY 11, 2016 – Bento Box Entertainment (BBE)announced the launch of Bento Box Digital Studios today at the Digital Entertainment World (DEW) conference in Los Angeles. A first for 2-D animation, Bento Box Digital Studios’ VR partnership with Littlstar will allow the companies to create immersive, premium animated stories that fans can discover, watch and share. The companies will launch a branded animation channel, powered by Littlstar’s technology and programmed with content created and curated by Bento Box. The story behind our first VR app

The Foundation

When starting to build Littlstar, our engineer brains wanted to build tools first. APIs, SDKs, players, encoding, etc. This not only gives us the tools we need to build the platform, but gives us an opportunity to give back to the community and work with other great developers. Within a few days, our co-founder Dom had an undocumented API that we could expose to the world. We were wondering if we should let the world see it in it's current form or not, and ultimately decided we should. What better way to refine it than to get it out there and get feedback?

The Random Email

We put the API out there as basically a read only content API. The only way you could interact with it, short of writing code, was to use curl. We had no libraries (which we have now), and no real documentation other than what's generated by a rails gem. We tweeted it out and posted to Facebook, and we expected very little to happen. Within a week, we received a random email from a developer name Den Ivanov. The email said something along the lines of: "Here is an .apk file for the Gear VR app I created based on your API." It was amazing :)

The Release

After a couple back and forth emails and Skype conversations, we decided to help Den release it into the wild. It may have been basic, but we had much to learn. So, we started working with Oculus over the course of a month, debugging, tweaking, testing, and ensuring proper operation across devices and operating systems. Once we had everything dialed, we got an email from Oculus. It said that the app was in a good place for release, and that they'd release it and feature it. Well, before anyone had a chance to read the email...they had released it and featured it. Wait! We wanted to wait until we added more content, and made a few tweaks before we released it. Too late. It was out there, and regardless we were thrilled to be one of the first applications EVER in the Gear VR.

The Learnings

The best way to learn something is to build something, test it, measure it, listen to feedback on it, and take the learnings into your next iteration. We learned a few things, and we're still learning! We have a basic upgrade to the VR apps coming, but there is something much bigger on the horizon. We look forward to hearing what you want in a great immersive experience, and please let us know what you'd like to see next!

We are proud to announce that we brought on two new killers joining us from Spotify. Joseph Werle will be taking over the reigns as CTO. He was previously at App Nexus before Spotify, and has tremendous experience building very large scale consumer streaming applications, monetization technology, and high performance video playback. He's been involved with Littlstar since the very beginning and we're thrilled to have him. Wells Johnston is joining us as Chief Data Scientist. He's a math genius and incredible full stack engineer, and brings a ton of big data and analytics experience to Littlstar. 

VR requires an entirely different stack for analytics, story telling, tools, and tracking, and both of these gentlemen bring a wealth of knowledge for capturing and moving around the huge amounts of data we're dealing with. Littlstar is proud to announce the beta of our panoramic video and VR cinema network.  You can see it in action right here right now! Our system was built from the ground up to exclusively support this new form of storytelling, and works across devices, cameras, and head mounted displays. We have a mobile app coming this week with Samsung Gear VR support and cardboard VR from DODOcase, among all the others. We have an open API for anyone to hack on and create any player experience they want, a desktop application for managing, syncing, and encoding your content (coming very soon), and an open source player to dabble with display. 

Our launch partners include awesome companies enabling VR experiences like DODOcase, the top producers in the world like Visualise(video seen below) who work with Mercedes, FIFA, Wimbledon, BBC, and more, and camera systems like Freedom360 and Giroptic.
